WHAT WE LOVE...

When this traditional hotel oozing old school charm opened in 1927 it was in the world's largest apartment building, with no fewer than 38 floors. Boasting a coveted Fifth Avenue address near Central Park, each corner of the hotel underlines history and old world character. There are a number of private apartments here, whose residents share the hotel's facilities. It has a great restaurant, fashioned after Harry's Bar in Venice (hotel guests receive a discount), and there's a gym, barbers and hair salon. Guest rooms and suites are spacious and classically decorated and furnished, adorned with antique furniture. The elegant lobby boasts splendid Renaissance-style frescoes, and the white-gloved lift attendants remind you you're staying somewhere particularly grand.

Style & Character

The hotel attracts generally an older clientele - both business people and leisure travellers stay here - and there's a fair number of residents. The walnut-lined lifts, complete with white-gloved attendants, make you feel you're in a 1940s B movie. They come from the Vanderbilt mansion on Fifth Avenue that was demolished during construction of the hotel.

Rooms

Room 405 (Park View Suite) is traditional, spacious with cream walls and flocked wallpaper, antique furniture and augmented by traditional pictures. We loved the 1920s and 1930s feel some rooms conjure up.

Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, daily newspaper and fresh flowers, free water and sodas, Louis Sherry chocolates, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

There's a 20% discount at the restaurant for hotel guests. We recommend the expertly-prepared Manhattan at the bar at the Harry Cipriani.

Harry Cipriani: restaurant and bar, Venetian cuisine and signature cocktails. Dishes include Veal Milanese, Filet Mignon alla Rossini and grilled Branzino. All-day dining, open daily.
