There's so much on the doorstep, with the trendy El Born neighbourhood and Barceloneta's beaches nearby, the greenery of Ciutadella Park and lots of restaurants, cafes and shops.

The hotel is a five minute walk from the Picasso Museum; to go further afield, get the metro from Arc de Triomphe a few hundred metres away.

The hotel is for all ages, although those in their 40s and 50s seem to dominate. The striking ornamental tiles in public areas provide real atmosphere.

You'll love the rooftop terrace, with views of Ciutadella Park and the sea.

The rooms are very similar and all one size (172 square feet), although those with a park view are more desirable than those with a courtyard view. We loved the simple yet stylish design; for example, the white tiled bathrooms have sleek white circular wash basins and black granite counters.

Enjoy a beer or cocktail in the bar area, which has a large selection of gins. There's a decent breakfast buffet spread, including cereal, fruit, breads and pastries, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage.
