WHAT WE LOVE...

The Litton is a surprisingly spacious, surprisingly stylish pub and boutique hotel, with a large garden fringed by the River Chew. It is a sociable place with a friendly atmosphere, making it the perfect choice for visitors to The Mendips who want to enjoy a drink after a day's sightseeing. You could see three cities from here: Wells, Bath and Bristol, plus get out on some walks or visit local caves. The hotel gets its contemporary decor just right and offers rooms both in the pub building - which has lots of exposed brickwork and roaring fires - and in a 500-year-old cottage, adjacent. The large garden is a hit in summer and there is also a heated patio beside the rushing river.

Style & Character

The hotel suits people who appreciate fashionable details and who want some life in the evenings, after days spent exploring North Somerset. We love the whiskey bar area for its gorgeous copper bar, selection of Scotch, two log burners and a private party feel.

Service & Facilities

A nice touch is the repurposed horsebox, which, in the summer, acts as an outdoor bar in the garden. Dogs are allowed in certain rooms and receive a welcome pack. There are plenty of wooded footpaths nearby. There is a £25 dog-cleaning charge.

Rooms

We like that some rooms in the 500-year-old cottage have access to a shared outdoor terrace with lounge seating - a boon in summer. Our favourite room is Litune, which has a vaulted ceiling and its head in the clouds, with cumulonimbus-motif wallpaper and fluffy ceiling lights.

Barrow Gurney, Butter Wells, Chew, Chewton Head, Greendown, Holly Marsh, Litune, Lords Mead, North Field, Oatfields, Sherborne, Watery Coombe
Facilities include: Hypnos bed, ensuite bathroom with toiletries, TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

We're impressed by the focus on natural, biodynamic and organic wines, which are all vegan friendly. Our favourite dish is the fish pie with prawns and mussels in a saffron cream with Gruyere mash, panko and greens.

Restaurant: buzzing, relaxed, modern British cuisine. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £15.50.
Whiskey Bar: cosy, oak panelled, 50 whiskies from around the globe.
