WHAT WE LOVE...

Oscar Wilde said that 'moderation is a fatal thing', advice taken seriously when this over-the-top Old Town cocktail bar with boutique hotel was dreamt up. There's a glamorous pre-war Berlin look with a dash of disco, from the fake fur and velvet in the bedrooms to the Gucci wallpaper in one of three cocktail bars. Aiming for theatrical debauchery it's the perfect setting for sin, although you may want to take a torch with you for reading the rock and roll-inspired cocktail list. The Edwardian railway compartment bedrooms make a virtue of their small size, so don't look for views (or bacon and eggs), but you can have breakfast bagels in bed and the soundproofing is first-class.

Location

We loved being a short stroll away from the best cashmere and best gelato in Scotland.

Style & Character

The hotel suits couples, and anyone looking for something decidedly different- this is as far from a chain hotel as you can get. There's dedication to detail, like the television screen magically appearing in a full-length mirror rather than hanging prosaically on a wall.

Service & Facilities

The bartenders are cocktail masters with bulging biceps from all that shaking.

  • Bar
  • Lounge
  • Live music

  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

The suite with its free-standing bath may be fabulous, but give us the cosy Orient-Express-worthy cabin any day. Rooms have a hand-built cocktail cabinet, complete with cocktail shaker - you'll never look at a minibar the same way again.

Cabin, Classic, Suite
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, Nespresso machine, hidden TV mirror, hand-built cocktail bar, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

You must try the prohibition age-based cocktail christened 'Nick and Nora', after the Thin Man films of the 30s. The breakfast hamper bagel with turkey, MontereyJack cheese, sloppy mustardy sauce and fried potatoes is sinfully delicious.

House of Gods cocktail bar & Lilith's Lounge: decadent bar and late night hideaway, serving cocktails. Open daily
