WHAT WE LOVE...

On the western edge of the Peak District, in the hamlet of Whitehough, you'll find Old Hall Inn - not so much a single inn as a little cluster of properties, all operating as one. The Old Hall Inn itself is an old country pub that's been modernised just enough to add contemporary shine to its period character. Walk beyond the bar and you enter the even older Whitehough Hall, an Elizabethan manor house, with a grand double-height dining room and minstrel's gallery. Heading 50 yards across the beer garden instead brings you to Paper Mill Inn, another old pub given a rustic-chic modern makeover. Together, they have all the right ingredients for a short break, from scenic surroundings to excellent food and drink.

Style & Character

The Old Hall Inn appeals equally to outdoors-loving adventurers and more indulgent souls in search of somewhere they know they'll eat, drink and sleep well. The beer garden is a lovely place to sit out, looking back at the Old Hall and the hills behind.

Service & Facilities

On summer weekends, there's often live entertainment in the beer garden and they host a popular beer festival each autumn. Dogs are allowed in the bar but not the bedrooms.

Rooms

The stove in your room will be lit when you arrive, making it feel cosy and welcoming on a chilly day. Our favourite is Room 10, in the old hall, which has a big oak four-poster bed, stone-mullioned windows and a window seat overlooking the garden.

Rooms 1-11, The Cress Annex, Crackin' View Studio, Spring Cottage, Shepherds Cottage
Facilities include: ensuite with shower, smart TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities, free use of 'Garmin' navigation devices pre loaded with all the local routes

Food & Drink

They're serious about sourcing locally where possible, keeping their own chickens, using meat from animals reared nearby and bartering beer for fish from local anglers. The fishcakes are lovely, the home-made chocolate truffles delicious, and people come here especially for the steak and local ale pie.

Paper Mill: light-bites, modern Italian cuisine. Open Wed-Fri 5-9pm, Sat 2-9, Sun 12-7.30pm (pizza only). Plates from £4.
Old Hall: hearty, modern British cuisine. Open Mon-Thur 12-9pm, Fri-Sat 12-9.30pm, Sun 12-7.30pm. Mains from £12.
