WHAT WE LOVE...

In a former convent school, minutes from the entrance to Alnwick's grand castle, the Cookie Jar is a blaze of unexpected design. School rooms and corridors are smart with stripped floorboards, tongue-and-groove panelling and a dazzling palette of Prussian blue and cream - fabrics, rugs, and arty vases and pottery. Bedrooms - some very cosy - are country-house chic with statement wallpapers, a mix of modern and vintage furniture, tactile fabrics and sharply modern bathroom. Overlooking the heated and terraced garden at the rear, the dining room is again bright in blue-and-white and serves up smart modern British dishes. The hotel is particularly geared up for country pursuits followers. And the name? A spin on the owner's surname, Cook.

Style & Character

Ideal for anyone seeking an alternative to country house frills-and-flounces, but with the same comforts - and the country-pursuits brigade. We love the colour scheme - and discovering there are so many shades of blue.
