WHAT WE LOVE...

Overlooking water meadows and grazing cows, this flint and brick-built Victorian inn has 20 bedrooms spread over its main building and the smaller and older Ancient House annex. Owned by the Holkham Estate, and located on the coast road, it's backed by Holkham's 3,000 acres of walled grounds and faces Lady Anne's Drive, which leads to the spectacular beach and nature reserve. Smart bedrooms, the cosy bar, and the conservatory restaurant serving estate-grown produce add to its popularity. A superb base for exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - whether on foot, by car, or on the Coasthopper bus which stops close by - the hotel welcomes dogs and families with children.

Style & Character

Not only is this a perfect base for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and outdoor-loving families, but its stylish rooms make a good retreat for couples looking for a romantic break. Dog-owners and their pets will find a friendly welcome, and no complaints about muddy boots in the wood-floored public areas. The funky decor in the ladies and gents toilets in the public areas is worth a look.

Service & Facilities

We love that the peaceful, walled rose garden, sheltered from the wind and tucked away behind Ancient House, is reserved for residential guests. Dogs can stay in the rooms of the main building and are allowed throughout the ground floor areas. Secure kennels are available on-site too.

Rooms

Rooms are named after shoot drives on the estate. Our favourite is 'Wilbrahams', a spacious family suite with a sofa-bed, sitting room and stairs to a roomy double. We also love south-facing 'Crabbe Castle Pit'.

Hare Clump, Tutsia Clump, Honk's Pit, Crabbe Castle Pit, Scarborough, Water Mire, Mouse Hill, Blunt's Corner, Hanging Fallow, Joe's Stop, Bush Close, Waterden, Cow Planting, Wilbrahams, Dale Hole, Lime Kiln, Fushia, Pistol Club, Emmerdale, Bones Belt
Facilities include: ensuite with shower and/or bath, free toiletries, tea and coffee facilities

Food & Drink

We love Lady Leicester's "healthy start" of smashed avocado on sourdough toast, poached eggs, toasted sunflower seeds and harissa. The restaurant's cut of the day is based on local beef, lamb or venison raised on the estate.

The Victoria: conservatory dining room, seasonal menus, meat from their farm, game from the estate in winter, homegrown produce, Norfolk seafood. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £15.75.
