Hotel Review
Byfords, Holt, Norfolk
Combining cafe, restaurant, deli and B&B, this popular local hub offers sixteen comfy rooms in the centre of a Georgian market town. Its cellar dates from the 15th Century and its interiors are full of character - with old wooden beams, exposed flint and brick walls, large fireplaces and flagstoned floors. Bedrooms, in browns and creams, come with gleaming, modern bathrooms and drench showers, while the all-day dining offers plenty of options from light snacks and sharing plates to stone-baked pizzas and full-blown dinners. An onsite car park is handy in this busy town, and it's an easy hop by car to the best of North Norfolk's sandy beaches.
THE DETAILS
Location
We love shopping for antiques and curios in the hidden yards and quiet backstreets of Holt.
The hotel is in the centre of town, surrounded by Holt's traditional shops and pubs. It's also a 10-minute drive from popular seaside villages such as Cley next the Sea.
By car: The hotel is 3 hours' drive from Birmingham, 3 hours 20 minutes from London and 45 minutes from Norwich. There is limited on-site parking, as well as free street parking and pay and display nearby.
By train: London Liverpool Street to Norwich station takes just under 2 hours. From there, you can take a 45-minute taxi, or change onto a train to Sheringham (1 hour) and then a 20-minute taxi. thetrainline.com

Rooms
Our favourite room is Number 3, which is a 'Posh' room overlooking the front of the building with a walk-in shower and sunken bath. Two of the ground floor rooms (10 and 11) are ideal for guests with walking difficulties - number 10 is properly adapted.

Their cakes, especially the lemon and poppy drizzle cake and the apricot and almond tart, are fab. Our favourite dish is the Byfords kedgeree, with locally smoked haddock, prawns, rice and poached egg.
Byfords Café: all-day dining, local produce, classic British dishes, pizzas, salads, sandwiches, afternoon teas, small plates. Open daily 8am-10pm. Mains from £13.25.
