WHAT WE LOVE...

The Dilly really offers the whole package, from its long history and terrific location at the top end of Piccadilly, to its swish design and excellent fitness centre; this is a five-star hotel that knows how to turn on the style. There's been a hotel on this site since 1908 and a recent makeover has enhanced its historical touches - there are numerous links to traditional London - while adding a dash of the cool and the contemporary. Rooms are traditional and yet hugely comfortable and the lovely spa is enhanced by a particularly large (for a hotel) swimming pool. The striking former banqueting rooms now house an excellent pop-up Indian restaurant, Madhu's.

The hotel suits business travellers and visitors to the capital, and is perfect for a romantic break too. There's a tradition of ringing an Edwardian gong in the lobby at 6pm to signal the switch from day to night - and cocktail hour!

Food & Drink

We loved the variety and quality of the restaurants, and the imaginative cocktails in the wonderfully decadent lounge. The Masala fish and the Boozi Bafu (spring lamb chops) were a treat. The à la carte breakfast was excellent too.

Madhu's: opulent dining room, Indian cuisine. Open Tue-Sun, 5:30-11:30pm. Mains from £11.
