WHAT WE LOVE...

Spread over a wooded site near Elterwater in Langdale, and with a spa and leisure complex, The Langdale feels like a discreet country club. There's nothing stuffy and formal about it, however - although the spa is definitely swanky - with a buzzy, open-plan bar and restaurant at the heart of things. Buildings make good use of slate, timber and glass to blend into the surroundings, while interiors have a cool and contemporary Scandi style: slate and stripped-wood floors, velvet fabrics, artful arrangements of glassware. There's a good bedroom choice and the food options are crowd-pleasing and filling. Well-suited to active types who like spacious, modern surrounds, and it's also close to fine walking.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the excellent walking options, whether low-level valley strolls or more testing climbs up the Langdale Pikes or the Old Man of Coniston.

Ambleside and Lake Windermere are a 10 minute-drive. The site is halfway between Elterwater with The Britannia pub, and Chapel Stile with The Wainwright Inn.
By car: 2 hours from Manchester, 3 hours 20 minutes from Edinburgh and just under 5 hours from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: trains run from Manchester Piccadilly (just over 1 hour), London Euston (3 hours) and Edinburgh (2 hours) to Oxenholme Lake District station. The hotel is a 40-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Active couples who like their comforts and a bit of pizazz to come back to after a day's walking or cycling - even fell-running - will like the style. The contrast between the sleek and chic interiors and the rugged surrounds is bewitching.

Service & Facilities

The layout of the site, with its separate buildings, gives you privacy, meaning you don't have to pad through reception in your robes - or damp swimming costume!

Rooms

The Waterside rooms, with their light-filled Scandi styling and balconies overlooking Great Langdale Beck are wonderfully calming. The big, modern bathrooms, even in the smallest rooms, are a treat after a day's walking - and the remote shower controls (warm up before you step in) are very clever.
