WHAT WE LOVE...

A five-star palazzo hotel right on the waterfront of the Grand Canal. Interiors are elaborate and full of 14th-century splendour, including a carved wooden ceiling in the main lounge and bar, wall frescos, gilt painted Corinthian pillars and stately staircases. Rooms are in different styles depending on which of the three adjoining palazzos you are staying in, but all are romantic and luxurious. The fifth-floor terrace restaurant has one of the finest views of the Grand Canal in the city, with views across to San Giorgio Maggiore island and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute church. The menu consists of creative dishes of modern Italian cuisine, including tasting menus with wine pairings. A live pianist adds to the glamour on Friday or Saturday nights.
