Guests tend to be affluent couples typically aged between 35 and 70, or families with teenaged children. We loved the impressive mix of bold colours and classy yet fun contemporary design against such a sumptuous historic backdrop.

Our room exuded a calm grandeur, with its dark green walls and upscale fixtures, fittings and furniture. We had a balcony looking out onto the courtyard. Bold artworks, carved mirror frames and classy black lights add to the elegance.

There's a huge wine list - 56 pages - and sommelier Alessandro Ragozzino knows his wines very well. At Da Sistina, the tuna 'roast beef' starter really almost passes off as roast beef - it's delicious and very different.
