Located at a crossroads within a small hamlet, surrounded by lovely countryside but on a quite busy road, this popular gastropub that was originally a 16th-century coaching inn near Ross-on-Wye excels at the food it offers. You don't expect such intricate, richly flavoured modern British cooking in such a rural location. There's a decent bar menu too and a great choice of beers, ciders, spirits (especially gins) and wines. The restaurant and bar areas are quite snazzy, and the guest rooms very comfortable. Extensively renovated in recent years, the pub has created a good blend of contemporary design while retaining historic character, such as original beams and some slightly wonky walls. Good walks abound nearby.
We loved the number of pleasant country walks on the doorstep.
You're close to the Wye Valley, while Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons in Wales are only 30 minutes by car.
By car: 1 hour 20 minutes from Birmingham, under 2 hours from Oxford and 3 hours from London. Free on-site parking.
By train: London Paddington to Hereford takes under 3 hours. The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com
The pub attracts a 40s+ crowd, especially foodies. The bar and restaurant area has a smart and contemporary feel - we loved the little touches such as vases of flowers at each table.

Hound (Standard Room) is a spacious, light room looking out to the road on one side and the garden and fields beyond on the other. It is comfortable with an armchair, easy chair, desk, tea and coffee, and comfortable double bed. The shower room has marble tiles and modern fixtures. Rooms have a classy mix of old and new, with 16th century oak beams mixing with glass partitions or a freestanding oval bath.

All 10 courses of the tasting menu were amazing, which is a real rarity. The food here is sensational and the langoustine bisque has such complex, rich flavours.
Restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes, locally-sourced and seasonal produce. Open Wed-Sat for lunch and dinner, Sunday lunch served 12-3:30pm. Tasting menu from £65pp.
