The Standard Inn, Rye, East Sussex
WHAT WE LOVE...
Recent extensive renovations have revealed wonderful original features of this 15th-century pub like beautifully carved beams, splendidly uneven walls and creaky floors. Located in the heart of the charming, historic town of Rye, a whole host of antique shops, boutiques, old pubs and restaurants are all on your doorstep to discover. The guest rooms are comfortable and traditional, if not exceptional, the bar is homely and lively, and the restaurant offers very impressive seasonal dishes using local ingredients such as Romney Marsh Lamb, Winchelsea beef and fish caught and delivered daily from Rye Harbour. There's also a decent wine list and a good selection of craft beers and local ales.

In the centre of Rye, there is a large choice of shops, bars, restaurants and wonderful historic buildings just moments away.
Head south and you'll find Camber Castle and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve - both 10 minutes by car.
By car: 2 hours from London, 1 hour 30 minutes from Brighton and under 3 hours from Oxford. Paid parking nearby.
By train: London St. Pancras to Rye (via Ashford) takes around an hour. It's a 5-minute walk to the hotel. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Weekenders of all ages will enjoy it here, especially older holidaymakers keen on pottering around an old town and its charming shops, bars and restaurants. We loved the impressive historic features of the building, many unearthed in renovations in recent years.

Rooms
The Hythe room has sloping floors and lots of beams, giving character and indicating its long history. There's a tapestry and old pictures. The original features provide character.

Food & Drink
You can eat in the bar area, which is slightly more rowdy, but the beamed back room restaurant area is especially charming, cosy and characterful, with its exposed brick, large carved wooden mirror, antique furniture and sheep hides draped over benches. The starter of baked devilled crab pot with toasted sourdough has a slightly fiery kick.
The Standard: gastro pub, locally sourced ingredients. Mains include Romney Marsh Lamb Chops and Pie of the Day. Open daily from 12pm.
