WHAT WE LOVE...
A good-looking country inn neatly updated for the 21st century, this honey-stone sanctuary sits in its own sweeping grounds just off the centre of Lower Slaughter, one of the Cotswolds' most famously beautiful villages. With a picturesque river skirting its ample lawns, it's a perfect English retreat. Stepping inside, there's an equally mellow vibe. Curl up by one of the stone fireplaces in winter or sit out on the generous terrace in summer - The Slaughters Country Inn is very much an informal venue. Child-friendly and dog-friendly, it exudes both down-to-earth charm and a great sense of welcome.

Location
A short, spectacular walk takes you to the neighbouring village of Upper Slaughter.
Set in the Cotswolds, there are plenty of walks. Visit Stow on the Wold or Bourton on the Water, for picture-perfect villages.
By car: around 45 minutes from Oxford, 2 hours from London and 1 hour from Bristol. Free parking available.
By train: direct trains to Moreton-in-Marsh from Oxford (35 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 30 mins). The station is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
Everyone will love this hotel - especially families with young children, who have generous space to run around in. The big fireplace at the end of the rambling bar area is magnificent.
Service & Facilities
On the day of our visit, the reception staff took much time and trouble in recommending walks (with maps to borrow) to fellow guests. Dogs are welcome to stay in the cottage rooms.

Light-filled Cotton Hall (a superior room) in the main house has wonderful views over the garden - and a slipper bath perfectly positioned to take in a particularly lovely vista. We loved the blend of traditional features (exposed stone and beams) and contemporary styling.

Food & Drink
For style and romance, head to the dining room for candlelit evening meals. The pan-seared trout with black garlic hollandaise was delicious.
Restaurant & Bar: country inn, period features. Showcasing local produces. Dishes include Gloucestershire black pudding salad, country terrine and fish and chips. All-day menu served Mon-Sat, Sunday lunch served 12-3pm.
