WHAT WE LOVE...

De Vere Beaumont Estate sits aristocratically on a grassy rise by the banks of the Thames - not far from Windsor Great Park and the turrets of Windsor Castle. The place itself isn't short on history either: the centrepiece is an imposing Georgian mansion - 'The White House' - which for much of its past formed part of a Catholic boarding school. Now it's a sprawling hotel under the banner of the De Vere group: over 400 guestrooms are arranged throughout a labyrinth of buildings - some old, some modern - watching out over lawns and woodlands. During the week it tends to get busy with conferences and business travellers: weekends see wedding guests mingle with families exploring the many attractions of the Thames Valley.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love leaving the hotel to take a 10-minute stroll along the Thames to the National Trust's Runnymede - the riverside meadows where the Magna Carta was sealed.

The hotel is in a picturesque estate, a 10-minute drive from Windsor Castle and Heathrow Airport.
By car: the hotel is around one hour from London, 1 hour 15 mins from Oxford and and 2 hours 30 mins from Birmingham. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside takes 1 hour 5 mins. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

The hotel is geared up for conference-goers, but families will be happy with the playground, the wide open spaces and so much to do on the doorstep. All guests staying at the hotel should try to peek into the chapel, a 19th century addition, with spectacular gilded ceilings and stained glass.

Service & Facilities

The highlight is undoubtedly the grounds - listen out for woodpeckers as you wander along the forest trail. Dogs under 35kg are welcome, and are given their own bowl, bed and treats. There's an extra charge of £30 per dog.

The palatial suites in The White House collectively form 'a hotel within a hotel', and are named after old Housemasters from bygone school days. The views from its upper windows are quietly beautiful, looking out across the lawns to the treetops and woodlands of the Thames Valley.
