WHAT WE LOVE...

If you see yourself as one of the cool kids, this one's for you. It's a hip 31-room boutique hotel in the city centre, above one of Sydney's trendiest eating, drinking and dancing venues. The handsome brick building dates from the 1890s and was once a warehouse. Inside you'll find contemporary furnishings and luxurious bathrooms. Establishment is home to a selection of swanky bars and restaurants, and a nightclub.

THE DETAILS

Location

It's down a laneway in the city centre - you can walk to Circular Quay, The Opera House and Darling Harbour but it lacks the harbour views that some holidaymakers crave when they stay in Sydney. The Museum of Sydney is a short walk away too, with high-tech displays that explain the city's history and temporary exhibitions.

Boutique city-centre hotel, around 15 minutes' walk from the Opera House.
By plane: flights to Sydney from London take around 24 hours with a stop in Dubai or Darwin. The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. Parking on-site costs AUD69 per day. skyscanner.com

Style & Character

It's not for children given the bars and late-night parties, but convenient for work trips and couples looking for somewhere cool to stay will like it. Hemmesphere Bar has an air of sophistication and marshmallow-soft velvet chairs that make you want to linger.

Service & Facilities

With just 31 rooms the service is friendly and personal. It can get noisy, especially on weekends, but the rooms come with ear plugs.

Rooms

The Loft Suite looks like it belongs in an interior design magazine. The bathroom has more marble than a mortuary. We love the Penthouse too, which has that warehouse-apartment feel. It's split over two floors, and has a spacious sitting room and huge bathroom.

Food & Drink

You'll find plenty of variety without leaving the hotel. The main bar serves pub classics, at Mr Wong there's tasty Cantonese food, and at Sushi-e chefs prepare mouthwatering sashimi in front of you. For pre-dinner drinks speakeasy style try Palmer & Co, for something classy and intimate head to Hemmesphere.

Mr Wong: traditional Cantonese cuisine. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Mains from AUD22.
Palmer & Co.: drinks, small plates. Open Tues-Thurs 5pm-2am, Fri & Sat 4pm-3am, Sun 5pm-3am. Dishes from AUD8.
