WHAT WE LOVE...

If you've ever wanted to say, 'I'm staying at my club', here's your chance. Originally a private institution established in honour of members of the Royal Scots Regiment, doing things right still matters here - it's the sort of place that practically demands you take Afternoon Tea. The rooms are positively pristine, comfortable and well-equipped, while the leafy New Town location is first class, both for exploring the city and your immediate neighbourhood. What with the good food (they're not afraid of a little well-judged nostalgia here), a friendly bar and utterly delightful staff you might find yourself feeling a little smug for choosing to be a (temporary) member.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love nipping down to Stockbridge for the popular Sunday market and a stroll along the Water of Leith.

Located in the centre of Edinburgh New Town, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery of Modern Art are both 10 minutes' walk away.
By car: from Glasgow around 1 hour, from Newcastle around 2 hours 40 minutes and from Manchester just over 4 hours. No on-site parking but Q Park at Greenside Place is half a mile away.
By train: from Glasgow Queens Street around 50 minutes, from Manchester Picadilly around 3 hours and from London Kings Cross around 4 hours 45 minutes. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

The hotel suits couples of a certain age, families and solo travellers - in fact, anyone who appreciates a bit of civilised comfort. Old regimental photographs on the walls are a moving reminder of those who died in the First World War.

Service & Facilities

We love relaxing in the soothing green oasis of Queen Street gardens after a day of city sightseeing - just ask reception for a key.

Rooms

Your expectations may be confounded by finding rainfall showers, rolltop baths and Nespresso machines, rather than a trouser presses and instant coffee. We love the deep red four-poster room, if only because the fringed swags remind us of epaulettes.

Food & Drink

We love a nice wee scone and a pot of tea in front of the fire in the friendly bar. Enjoy proper porridge followed by a grilled kipper for breakfast.

The Abercromby Dining Room: elegant, gentlemen's club feel, smart dresscode, traditional Scottish cuisine. Open for breakfast and dinner for non-members. Dinner mains from £14.
The Cocktail Bar & Lounge: relaxed, cosy, comfortable, bar food. Open 11am-midnight. Small plates from £5.50.
